Recovery After Dental Implant Placement
Recovery after dental implant placement goes through an initial healing period, which usually lasts 2–3 days in milder cases and 7–10 days when the procedure is combined with bone augmentation, bone contouring, sinus lift, soft tissue correction, or other additional surgical procedures.
Pain is typically strongest on the first day and decreases significantly on the second and third days. Swelling depends on the complexity of the surgery — it is usually most noticeable the morning after the procedure and may persist for 3–5 days. A slight temperature increase up to 37–38°C (98.6–100.4°F) is also possible.
During this period, it is extremely important to strictly follow your dentist’s instructions regarding oral hygiene, nutrition, avoidance of physical strain and hot foods, as well as the prescribed antibiotic therapy.
The First Days After Surgery
Normal Symptoms:
Mild pain, swelling, tenderness, light bleeding, and a slight increase in temperature are normal reactions. In more complex procedures, bruising on the skin may also occur.
Pain Relief:
It is recommended to take a painkiller before the anesthesia completely wears off. For example: Aulin, Nimesil, Analgin (or other medication prescribed by your dentist).
Rest:
Avoid heavy physical activity (especially combat sports) to prevent increased blood pressure and the risk of bleeding.
Cold Compresses:
Apply cold compresses to the outside of your cheek to help reduce swelling.
🚫 Avoid smoking and vaping during the first few days after the procedure.
🚫 Do not press or touch the operated area with your fingers.
Oral Hygiene and Nutrition
Nutrition:
For the first week, avoid hot foods and drinks, as well as hard or crunchy foods (such as seeds, nuts, or popcorn). Start with soft foods and gradually return to a normal diet as healing progresses.
Oral Hygiene:
Maintain good oral hygiene, but handle the surgical site carefully. Do not brush directly over the implant area for the first 3 days. Use an antiseptic mouth gel and a soft toothbrush according to your dentist’s instructions.
Full Recovery
Osseointegration:
The fusion of the implant with the bone (osseointegration) is a key stage of healing and usually takes around 3 months.
Load:
If a temporary crown or bridge has been placed immediately after implant insertion, avoid hard foods for approximately 3 months.
